Abstract

|
The major active ingredient in Turmeric is known to be curcumin that was estimated to be about 2% in dry weight of the root of Turmeric. Despite knowing various biological activities of curcumin, less is known about the efficient process for the purification of curcumin. Therefore we focused on the purification of curcumin from the extract of Turmeric. High molecular weight chitosan (HMWC) and self-assembled chitosan (SAC) formed using HMWC by oxidative reaction with ammonium persulfate were used as matrix or precipitant for the purification of curcumin. Herewith we describe a simple and reproducible approach for the purification of curcumin from the extract of Turmeric.
